Announcements for June 5-12, 2022

Sunday, June 5, 2022

This Sunday, June 5, worship (followed by a potluck lunch!) will be held at Athletic Park beginning at 10:00am. Come out and join all the Mennonite Newton churches for worship and support our children as they wrap up their week long Vacation Bible School together. Bring your own lawn chair for the worship service. If you plan to eat lunch following the service, please bring a potluck dish to share and your own table service. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

The BCMC church building will not be open on Sunday, June 5th. The live-stream link to this Sunday’s worship service is different than normal. You can use this link to watch from home. 10 am Worship Service at Athletic Park (worship will be approximately 30 minutes) All who attend are welcome to participate in a game and a craft afterwards.

Please pray for the sr high youth group this week as they travel to Colorado to do a week of service at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp June 6th-11th. Renee Reimer will be out of the office joining them on this last adventure together.

Library Committee Announcement
The Library theme for June and July is Caldecott and John Newbery Award Winners. We have many of these award winning books that would be of interest to both adults and children. Come check them out.

We are also continuing to accept and sell puzzles. Not only are they on the cart, but also below the new book section on the west wall. Just leave a suggested donation of $5 in the envelope and enjoy. We have a long list of books that we would like to add to our collection and this is a great way to support our efforts.

Prairie Bronze Handbell Ensemble Concert
The Prairie Bronze Handbell Ensemble will present a concert June 5, 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 900 Columbus, Newton. Guest artist will be Brett Jackson on saxophone and clarinet. The concert is free and open to the public.

Memorial Service for Jim Goering
The memorial service for Theodore James “Jim” Goering will be held Saturday, June 11, 10:45 am, at Grace Community Church, 1600 South Anderson Road, Newton. Visitation will be Friday, June 10, 6-8 pm, also at Grace Community Church. Jim died April 13, 2022 at Kidron Bethel Village. Jim’s wife is Shirley Goering and his siblings are Josephine Schmidt, Homer Goering, Helen Nachtigal, and Vernon Goering. An Invitation from the Seekers Sunday School Class
June 12 Seekers Sunday school will meet in the Fellowship Hall. Kamala Platt will read from her poetry book: “Gravity Prevails: and so does love”. Anyone is welcome.

To fellow worshipers of Bethel College Mennonite Church:
The screen study committee is grateful for the strong support that our fellowship has given to installing a screen in our sanctuary. We continue to believe that it will enhance worship and provide enhanced experiences for conferences, weddings and other events.
We have been receiving gifts and commitments to cover the requested 1/4^th of the total cost of the project prior to beginning installation. To date, we have received a little less than ½ of the required $11,250.00. McClellan Sound has advised us that there will be a significant price increase for the projector and screen in the middle of June. So there is some urgency for us to fulfill the balance of the “tithe” very soon so that we can begin the installation. We request and encourage those able to contribute toward the project to do so very soon. These contributions can be in the form or cash donations or pledges to be completed at a later time.

Chancel Choir Director needed at BCMC
Bethel College Mennonite Church (North Newton, KS) is looking for a Chancel Choir Director. This is a part-time position, August 15-May 15. As part of the team of musicians on the church staff, the director is responsible for music selection, rehearsals, and performances of the Chancel Choir. The choir sings approximately 2 times per month during September-May and participates in a Christmas Eve program. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:30-8:30.

Summer Camp Season is approaching!
Faith Formation Commission recognizes that attending summer camps is not cheap, but that it is an extremely valuable part of faith formation for our young people. We have some scholarship funding available to assist families with covering the cost of registering for the 2022 camping season. We also hope to have funds available after the camping season to provide some amount of reimbursement to all families with campers. Please contact Mary Ellen Hodge or Pastor Todd Schlosser if you’d like assistance with camp registration this summer. These funds are only available to campers who camp at Mennonite camps. We encourage you to get registered early for an awesome summer of camping experiences!

If anyone at BCMC would like to support our young people attending camp you can feel free to donate to our Mennonite Camping Scholarship Fund by writing a check made out to BCMC (with Mennointe Camp Scholarship in the memo line) and drop it off on Sunday morning or in the church office.

Sat., June 4 – The public is invited to Walk Sand Creek Trail Day, part of National Trails Day®. Water will be available for people and leashed dogs at the trailhead at Memorial Grove on the Bethel College campus, dawn to dusk (6 a.m.-8 p.m.), courtesy of the Sand Creek Trail Committee, with members there to answer any questions about the trail.

Sat., June 4 – Kauffman Museum first-Saturday bird walk, 7 a.m. start time in the museum parking lot at the corner of Main and 27th streets in North Newton. Experienced birders lead a walk of 1-1.5 hours in Chisholm Park and on Sand Creek Trail (terrain is mostly wood-chip path and sometimes uneven/sloping).

Invitation to support Mennonite World Conference – As WDC prepares to participate in the upcoming MC USA delegate assembly May 27-30, and our own annual assembly July 29-31, we remember that we are also part of a global Anabaptist fellowship! Berlin Exodus Presentation – Sun., June 26—7:00 pm—Come hear the story of how MCC worker, Peter Dyck, moved 1,200 Ukrainian Mennonite refugees located in Berlin to a waiting ship in West Germany to travel to Paraguay in 1947 (75 years ago). The Berlin Exodus (also known as the Great Escape) is the theme of an evening presentation at Trinity Mennonite Church (211 Elm Street, Hillsboro, KS) led by Calvin Buller.

Asylum seekers, like refugees, are migrants who flee their homes due to a fear of violence or persecution. Join MCC and partners from across the U.S. to learn more about who asylum seekers are and the many ways the faith community can walk alongside them in their journey to find safe refuge.

During this webinar, Katherine Smith, West Coast MCC’s Border and Migration Coordinator will share about what families experience at the U.S.-Mexico border. Cecilia Valenzuela from Casa Mariposa Detention Visitation Center will share about the need for accompaniment for asylum seekers currently in detention. Jessica Sapalio, program coordinator for Unitarian Universalist Service Committee’s Congregational Accompaniment Program for Asylum Seekers, and Rev. Chris McNabb, Neighbor to Neighbor Program Manager for Episcopal Migration Ministries, will share about programs to help churches sponsor asylum seekers in their own community.

MENNONITE CHURCH USA ANNOUNCEMENTS
Mennonite Church USA (MC USA), in partnership with Anabaptist Disabilities Network, has launched “Learn, Pray, Join: Welcoming EveryBODY,” an initiative that celebrates the many gifts that people with disabilities bring to our church communities. In June, MC USA will seek to engage people in this initiative by offering resources, prayers and ways to care for one another and to address issues of accessibility in the church. Mennonites Against Militarism – a collaboration of Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Central Committee, U.S. – is seeking to launch an initiative to counter military recruitment of U.S. youth, called Alternatives to Military Enlistment Network (AMEN). Prayer Request for Mennonite Mission Network: Martine Audéoud, serving with Mennonite Mission Network, vacated her office apartment in France to make space for people fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but God sent her a Nigerian family with three children instead. Pray that this family will find support and be able to start a new life. Pray also for Martine as she prepares lectures and counsels doctoral students from her kitchen table.

Prayer Request for Western District Conference: Pray for WDC congregations hosting Vacation Bible School this summer, as they share God’s love and good news with children in the church and the surrounding neighborhoods.

This service will not be live streamed and will not be finished until Saturday night so you will not be able to click on the normal live stream button or access it prior to Sunday morning. For those who would like to worship in community on Sunday morning, the worship video will be shown in the fellowship hall beginning at 9:30am and followed by informal conversation with one another.

Vacation Bible School
Please pray for the children who will be attending VBS from May 31-June 3. Bible passages that will be discussed during the Passport to Peace VBS will be: Acts: 26-40, Matthew 25: 31-46, 1 Samuel 25:1-35, Genesis 26:12-33, and Luke 10:25-37.

A Note from the Reopening Task Group Regarding the Fellowship Hall
The Reopening Committee is recommending removing limitations and allowing the BCMC Fellowship Hall to function as it was functioning pre-pandemic, including potlucks, fellowship coffees, and funeral meals to groups that fit the capacity. It has been determined the capacity in fellowship hall for health reasons, fire code, and mobility reasons is 125 persons. With that capacity limit, we may need to be creative in how to serve groups that are larger than 125 persons. Please note that the removal of restrictions does not mean that funeral meals, fellowship coffee, potlucks, and other fellowship hall activities will immediately resume in pre-pandemic fashion. Commissions and committees will still need time to organize and decide how they can best serve our church and our community. This removal of restrictions is also with the caveat that if our church and broader community needs dictate, we will move to more limited measures in the future.

Retractable Screen in the Sanctuary
At the April congregational meeting, members of the BCMC community voted in support of a project that will install a retractable screen in the front of the sanctuary. With this in mind, the Church Board is happy to announce that a special, above-budget fund has been established to accept donations toward this project.If you would like to give to this project, please earmark your donation to the “screen project”. For more information on this, please see the minutes from the April congregational meeting. Thanks for your support! June 25 will mark the 72nd anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War. Though there was a ceasefire in 1953, the United States and North Korea have yet to sign a peace treaty to officially end the war. Thousands of Korean Americans continue to be separated from family members, and humanitarian access in North Korea remains challenging.
At the 7th annual Korea Peace Advocacy Week, hundreds of people across the country will participate in virtual advocacy meetings to urge their members of Congress to support:

*   A Peace Agreement to end the Korean War
*   Life-saving humanitarian assistance
*   Reunification of separated families

Prior to the advocacy week, you will:

* Receive a one-hour training on how to advocate to members of Congress

During the advocacy week, you will:
* Have one to three meetings with congressional staff. Meetings with members of Congress will take place during the week, typically between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. EDT. Meetings usually last about 30 minutes, and coordinators will do their best to work with your schedule.

A MESSAGE FROM COMMUNITY PLAYSCHOOL
Community Playschool, Inc. has recently completed our school year and we are excited to say that, despite Covid-19, we were able to stay in person and open all school year! Twenty children of the Newton community participated in the program this year at a minimal cost to their families, thanks to five area churches and United Way. We again want to thank BCMC for being one of those supporting churches through monetary donations, the use of the facilities, secretarial and custodial services and a welcoming attitude toward our program. It is nice to have a home here! We also are grateful for the matching grant that we received from this church through the Everence Sharing Fund, and to the Women’s Fellowship and the Seekers Sunday school class for their donations. Members of the facilities committee also helped with installation of the new storage shed on the playground. I want to acknowledge the service of Clifferd Dick as BCMC’s representative on our board, also serving as treasurer. Barb Voran, Stahli Claassen and Cynthia Linscheid, served as teachers, helpers, and substitutes this year. These volunteers help make it possible for us to continue to provide an affordable preschool experience to families who need it most. A big thanks to Monica Lichti and Mike Crawford for their extra duties related to our being housed here at BCMC!

Building a Lasting Connection Relationship Retreat – Communication is key for a healthy and long-lasting relationship. During this 2-day retreat, couples will learn and practice skills together that promote healthy communication with one another in order to promote ways of effectively expressing hope, validating feelings, and navigating concerns together. While these skills are helpful for all people, this retreat will be geared toward couples who have been together for 10 years or under (married, engaged, or dating are all welcome). This retreat will be held at Camp Mennoscah and led by Katie Dyck (LCMFT) and Renee Reimer (ordained pastor). This retreat will primarily focus on communication and connection on a secular level, but spiritual practices to do together will also be offered for couples searching to connect on the Divine level too.

Mennonite World Conference Assembly participants on-site nearly doubledThe Indonesian Assembly just got a little bit larger. The National Advisory Committee for Assembly 17 and the executive committee of MWC have decided to raise attendance numbers for the gathering in Indonesia to 1250.

COVID-19 cases in Indonesia remain low so the Indonesian government has lifted quarantine restrictions for travelers.

“We would love to see you in Indonesia. Please register now! It is not yet too late to make travel plans,” says Liesa Unger, chief international events officer.

“Anyone can register until we reach the limit. Our registration team is happy to put in the extra effort to facilitate these late registrations and General Council arrangements.”

If gathering sizes are increased later, more local participants may join the closing worship service at Holy Stadium, 10 July 2022.

The expanded number of participants allows for the General Council to take place onsite instead of online.

“Mennonite World Conference is a communion – that means we are in a deep, spiritual, unifying relationship with one another,” says César García, general secretary. “The discernment work of the General Council is best done where we can spend time with each other, fellowshipping not only in sessions but also over meals and in leisure outside of meetings.”

The Commissions will also attend Assembly and hold face-to-face meetings.

“Without a doubt, our time in Indonesia will be a blessing for our global communion,” says César García.

New Hope Shelter Appeal
Once again, I send out an appeal to anyone who would be willing to help in some way at New Hope Shelter. We are running on a skeleton crew of volunteers, and help in the way of new recruits is needed. The following are needed:
1. Volunteers to spend time with residents at New Hope from 5 to 11 PM. BCMC is responsible for having volunteers for a week every 9 weeks. An orientation is given for new volunteers.
2. Evening Coordinators from 5 to 8 PM on Saturday and Sunday evenings every 9 weeks. An orientation is given for this.
3. Meals each evening for a week every 9 weeks.

WDC Minister, Brad Roth of West Zion Mennonite Church, Moundridge, KS, will be holding a book signing event at Faith & Life Bookstore on Thursday, May 12 from 6-7pm for his new book, The Hunger Inside: How the meal Jesus gave transforms lives. Summer Staff Orientation Week is coming soon! During this week, summer staff do training for Youth Development, the Staff Handbook, Reducing the Risk of Abuse, and more. Memorial Day Work and Play Retreat is a weekend for families and individuals to volunteer at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp. Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request: Mennonite Mission Network joins Marlene Wall, president of LCC International University in Lithuania, in requesting prayer for faculty and staff, who are caring for both students and refugees from Ukraine. Ukrainian refuges have traveled about 700 miles to flee the violence from the Russian invasion. Pray that God’s people around the world will contribute to this ministry.

For our April congregational meeting, the Church Board is choosing to experiment with a new time and format. We’ve heard that our typical 1:00 pm time interrupts nap time for young families and sometimes overlaps with sports or other activities for families with older children. In our efforts to engage and accommodate younger families, we are following their suggestion of using our Sunday School hour; we will begin our meeting on April 24 at 10:45 am. We have also listened to those who feel our meetings include too much reporting and not enough discussion of important issues our congregation faces. Therefore, we are planning to have the meeting around round tables in Fellowship Hall. We are planning for light snacks and beverages as well.

The Mentor and Mentee event is this coming Sunday, April 24th from 4-6pm at the North Newton pickleball court. Faith Formation Commission will lead some Bible minute to win it games, there will be yard games and snacks available, and hopefully some fun pickleball games for all to enjoy. Reach out to your mentor or mentee and come and spend some quality time together!

Come one, come all – to the 2022 BCMC Camp Mennoscah Church Retreat! This year’s retreat is on May 7-8 (Mother’s Day Weekend), and we hope that you’ll be able to join us for some fun, fellowship, fishing, and festivities in the glory of God’s fantastic creation. Meals and lodging are both available, and pre-registration is strongly encouraged. There won’t be worship in the BCMC building on May 8, so even if spending the night isn’t for you, please consider making the trip out on Sunday morning to worship – where we will hopefully be celebrating the act of baptism again.

2022 WDC Annual Assembly Announcement – “United in Purpose, Together in Love” is our WDC Annual Assembly theme for our July 29-31, 2022 gathering at Camp Copass, Denton, TX. There will be time to pray, serve, discern the ministry of the church, and play together. Adults, children and youth welcome. There will be separate, age-appropriate programming for kids and youth. Western District Women in Mission invites all women to a virtual “Meet-up” on Tuesday, April 26^th, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Please join us as we hear from Barbara Gingrich, Cheryl Kaufman, and Cindy Thompson from Lorraine Avenue Mennonite Church in Wichita about their Knit4Peace project. Then, Sarah Augustine will discuss her personal life journey and book she authored called The Land is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery (Herald Press, 2021). Sarah is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendant and founder and cochair of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition and Executive Director of a dispute resolution center in central Washington State. She is a columnist for Anabaptist World and co-hosts the Doctrine of Discovery podcast with Sheri Hostetler. Following the event, you will be invited to participate in an online survey to provide your ideas about future Western District Women in Mission activities. CAMP MENNOSCAH ANNOUNCEMENTS

You have a little time left to order a Verenike Casserole meal for the Camp Mennoscah fundraiser. Click here to reserve one or more! This fundraiser is for Camp Mennoscah’s summer youth camps and retreats. Your donations will help campers Build on the Rock and Play in the Sand! The meal consists of verenike casserole, seasoned green beans, zweiback, and fruit crisp. Each meal is intended for one person.

Pray for the Fasts as they transition from their home along the Purus River to a new culture that focuses on cattle-raising and lumber.

Western District Conference Prayer Request: Please join with me in praying to the Lord of the harvest, asking for workers to be raised up in the churches to serve within and to be sent out. Announcements for April 17-24, 2022

April 24, 2022 Congregational Meeting – 10:45 am
For our April congregational meeting, the Church Board is choosing to experiment with a new time and format. We’ve heard that our typical 1:00 pm time interrupts nap time for young families and sometimes overlaps with sports or other activities for families with older children. In our efforts to engage and accommodate younger families, we are following their suggestion of using our Sunday School hour; we will begin our meeting on April 24 at 10:45 am. We have also listened to those who feel our meetings include too much reporting and not enough discussion of important issues our congregation faces. Therefore, we are planning to have the meeting around round tables in Fellowship Hall. We are planning for light snacks and beverages as well.
We know this plan brings difficulties, particularly for Sunday School classes that have specific plans and lessons. We are sorry about these difficulties, and we hope we can all embrace this experimental change as our congregation works at being the church together.

Dr. John and Clara Schmidt – former members of Alexanderwohl and First Mennonite – were Mennonite medical pioneers in Paraguay, S.A (1941-2001). Their 60-year saga of service and adventure is now documented in a new book, CALLED. The authors, Marlena Fiol and Ed O’Connor, will share a behind-the-scenes look at what motivated them to write the book, where the seven years of research took them, and some of the reactions they’ve received to the book from a wide range of readers — including family members and leaders of the Mennonite Central Committee. How Can We Help? On April 21, 7 pm the WDC Immigration Task Force invites you to learn the latest on how to support new migrants and refugees near you and learn about how to join the mission of two organizations who have been working at refugee resettlement and immigration justice for many years. SPRUCE BEETLE PACKET WORKDAY APRIL 23TH – The effort to minimize the impact of the spruce beetle here at Rocky Mountain Mennonite Camp continues with the favorable trends we’ve seen of less beetles. Pheromone packets continue to be disbursed around camp to “communicate” to the beetles to go elsewhere. We need your help by signing up on the camp’s Volunteer page and selecting the “Signup for Maintenance“ button. Friday night accommodations are offered by request and meals will begin with breakfast Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. Hope to have you join us!

SKY-HI-VIEW CARPET REMOVE APRIL 30TH – With the new shower and bathroom renovation for the Sky-Hi-View cabin, the excellent opportunity to greatly improve the flooring for the entire cabin presented itself. Before the new vinyl planks in the bathroom and kitchen/entry along with new carpet in the living space and bedrooms can be installed, the deep blue carpet needs to be removed. Dr. John and Clara Schmidt – former members of Alexanderwohl and First Mennonite – were Mennonite medical pioneers in Paraguay, S.A (1941-2001). Their 60-year saga of service and adventure is now documented in a new book, CALLED. The authors, Marlena Fiol and Ed O’Connor, will share a behind-the-scenes look at what motivated them to write the book, where the seven years of research took them, and some of the reactions they’ve received to the book from a wide range of readers — including family members and leaders of the Mennonite Central Committee. Community Playschool Annual Meeting
The annual meeting of the Corporation of the Community Playschool, Inc. will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, Fellowship Hall, Bethel College Mennonite Church. This meeting will be open to members of the corporation which includes members of sponsoring churches. All are welcome!

Camp Mennoscah is having a Verenike Casserole Fundraiser on April 30! If you enjoyed the meal last year, this will be very similar–more details will be coming soon!Meal: verenike casserole, seasoned green beans, zweiback, and fruit crisp.Summer youth camps and retreats are a vital and living part of faith formation for youth and young adults. Your meal donation will support Camp Mennoscah’s mission to love one another, build relationships and follow Jesus Christ.

UPDATE for Summer Youth Camps!! If camp happened today, masks would be optional. Campers would stay in cabins. Campers/staff who are not fully vaccinated would need to provide a negative COVID test. Then, Sarah Augustine will discuss her personal life journey and book she authored called The Land is Not Empty: Following Jesus in Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery (Herald Press, 2021). Sarah is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendant and founder and cochair of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition and Executive Director of a dispute resolution center in central Washington State. She is a columnist for Anabaptist World and co-hosts the Doctrine of Discovery podcast with Sheri Hostetler. Following the event, you will be invited to participate in an online survey to provide your ideas about future Western District Women in Mission activities. We hope you will be willing to share your input on how WDWM plays an important role for women today. How Can We Help? On April 21, 7 pm the WDC Immigration Task Force invites you to learn the latest on how to support new migrants and refugees near you and learn about how to join the mission of two organizations who have been working at refugee resettlement and immigration justice for many years. Guest speakers will be Charity Stowell (MCC Newcomer Connections Coordinator) and Jen Rafter (International Rescue Committee Development Coordinator). Lent Prayers
Pastoral staff at BCMC will be facilitating prayers during lent on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 4 pm. This is a time to take a break from the day and let evening come. We will pray together via Zoom for about 15-20 minutes using the daily prayer book from the Corrymeela Community, northern Ireland’s longest running peace and reconciliation organization: Daily Prayer with the Corrymeela Community by Padraig O Tuama.The next prayer times will be March 22 and 24.

Rainbow Signs at BCMC
Since the church has historically been a harmful place for LGBTQ+ people, we find it necessary to explicitly show welcome and affirmation for LGBTQ+ people who may enter our church doors. Therefore a small rainbow sign has been placed near each entryway at our church. If you have questions or comments about how our church can become more welcoming, please contact any member of the Inclusion Task Group: Megan Kohlman, Karen Ediger, John Kliewer, Karen Penner, or Nathan Koontz.

Easter Lillies
You are invited to share an Easter lily for the sanctuary on Easter Sunday, Apr. 17. The Worship Decoration Committee will purchase lilies. To contribute, email your information to the church office about the donor of the lily and who is to be either honored or remembered. Place payment of $11.00 per lily in the offering plate or bring to the church office by Apr.3. Make checks payble to BCMC designated “Flower Fund.” There will be a table at the back of the sanctuary this Sunday to sign up for a lily. Contributors may pick up lilies to take home after the Easter worship service.

The annual meeting of the Corporation of the Community Playschool, Inc. will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, Fellowship Hall, Bethel College Mennonite Church. This meeting will be open to members of the corporation which includes members of sponsoring churches. All are welcome!

There will be a Mentor and Mentee event on Sunday, April 24th from 4-6pm at the North Newton pickleball court. Faith Formation will lead some Bible minute to win it games, there will be yard games and snacks available, and hopefully some fun pickleball games for all to enjoy. Reach out to your mentor or mentee and come and spend some quality time together!

The Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale Needs You!
CALLING ALL BAKERS: There will be sign-up sheets at the back of the sanctuary each Sunday through April 3 for persons willing to take the time and energy to help alleviate physical suffering around the world by baking pies, Zwieback, etc., for the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. Sun., April 3 – Sunday-Afternoon-at-the-Museum program, John M. Janzen, “Drums or Organ: Contesting Musical Styles in African Christianity,” 3 p.m., Kauffman Museum auditorium. This program is associated with the current special exhibit marking 125 years of Kauffman Museum, and Janzen will be talking about items included in the exhibit. Due to the impracticality of social distancing, face coverings will be required indoors regardless of vaccination status.

Cottonwood Complex Fire

The Kansas Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) has been responding to the Cottonwood Complex Fire in Reno County Kansas. We have completed 17 jobs of clearing debris from homes that were a total loss in the fire and have 5 more sites we are working on. We will be concluding the clean up phase of the disaster response soon. Thanks to all of the volunteers who responded with equipment and labor in this project, Cleo Koop Kansas MDS Chair person.

CAMP MENNOSCAH ANNOUNCEMENTS

Men and Boys Retreat is this weekend, April 1-3!No pre-registration needed. Bring a father, son, brother, mentor, or friend to Camp Mennoscah for this long-standing, guys-only retreat! Claim a place to sleep in the cabins, bunkhouses or sleep in your own tent under the stars. Meals can be purchased for Saturday night, Sunday morning and lunch. WEBINAR FROM MENNONITE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Over the past month, we have borne witness to a heartbreaking refugee crisis in Ukraine. We’ve seen families forced to make life or death decisions in a matter of hours. We’ve watched as mothers and grandparents crowd into trains, cars and buses to cross borders with their children, unsure of where they will go next or when they will be able to return.

Sadly, this refugee journey is not unique to Ukrainians. According to the United Nations, there are over 26 million refugees throughout the world who have been forced to flee their communities. Less than 1% will find safety in the U.S., but for the families accepted into the U.S. resettlement program, the journey does not end when they arrive in their new communities.

You are invited to join MCC and Church World Service on Tuesday, April 12, at 2 PM EDT for a webinar to learn more about how to welcome refugees in your community. During this time, we’ll address questions such as:

Who are refugees?
How do refugees come to the U.S.?
What does the refugee resettlement process look like?
What are some challenges and opportunities refugees encounter when they settle into their new community?
What are some ways each of us can get involved and support refugees in the U.S.?

Mennonite Mission Network Prayer Request: Tomorrow, Eastern Mennonite High School students will conclude their week-long Mennonite Mission Network civil rights tour in the southern United States through the Youth Venture program. Pray for participants as they apply their new perspectives to the injustice in their home communities and congregations. Pray also for participants in Youth Venture’s two July civil rights tours and an immigration/borderlands tour. Application deadline is May 1.
